Come to an evening of Romanian folk music and dance featuring the new band Sâmbra Oilor!

As part of the Minnesota State Arts Board's 2015 Artist Initiative Grant, Katrina Mundinger purchased and taught herself to play the rare taragot - an Eastern European woodwind instrument integral to the music of Romania.  At this debut performance, she is proud to present music and dance tunes from Romania, focusing on the region of the Banat located in the southwest of the country.

Joining her in the new ensemble are Sydney Lefevre (violin), Matt Miller (bass), Natalie Nowytski (voice), Jim Parker (kontra and guitar), Eric Ray (accordion), and Jenny Schultz (cimbalom).

Before the live music even begins you will be able to learn to dance to it! John Omorean, artistic director of Izvorașul Romanian Dance Ensemble, will teach the basic steps needed to enjoy the music from a participatory perspective!

Katrina has performed as an instrumentalist and orchestra director for the Ethnic Dance Theatre (EDT) Folk Orchestra since 1999. In 2002, she, along with other EDT musicians, launched the Balkan Party band Orkestar Bez Ime (OBI). OBI has become the Upper Midwest’s primary proponent of music from this once war-torn region and its inhabitants, including the Romany people (Gypsies). Katrina was awarded a McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians in 2011 with OBI, as well as a Minnesota Emerging Composers Award (from the American Composers Forum) in 2012.

Katrina Mundinger is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
